Investments As Donations
How to give investments as a donation, and not pay any tax
You may want to make a donation to St. James, but you may not have ready cash on hand.
If you have investments, like stocks or mutual funds, they may have grown in value over the years.
As such, selling some of them to provideyour gift may cost you money in taxes.
Not to worry!
The United Church of Canada Foundation is equipped to facilitate your charitable donation, with no tax payable by you.
A gift of investments such as stocks or mutual funds can be a good way to make donations to organizations
you care about and get an extra tax credit. That is because a charitable gift of stocks or mutual funds is free of tax
on any capital gains. The reason is that they aren’t sold by you; rather, they are transferred in-kind (i.e. as they are,
without being sold) to the Foundation, and the Foundation sells them and sends the proceeds to St. James.
In other words, the Foundation acts as a go-between, so you don’t have to pay any tax to make your donation,
and you still receive the full benefit of a charitable receipt for the full value of the investments.
It’s always a good idea to consult with your broker or financial advisor before considering such a gift.
They can help you choose the most suitable investments to give and help you achieve the biggest tax advantage.
Please also note that you receive your charitable receipt from the Foundation (not St. James) based on the value
of your investments at the time of the transfer to the Foundation, and St. James receives your cash gift
based on the value at the time the investments are sold.
Due to the time difference, the value of the gift will not likely match the value of your receipt.
