Dexter Van Dyke
Dexter was born in Spiritwood, SK on May 16, 1954. His childhood and teenage years were spent
growing up on a family farm sixteen miles southwest of Spiritwood on the northern edge of the R.M. of
Meeting Lake. His first experiences of church were at the Meeting Lake School with worship services
that were led by the Anglican priest from Spiritwood. It was in that community that he was baptized. He
attended the Rabbit Lake Central School grades one through twelve.
In his second year of university he was confirmed by Knox United Church in Saskatoon. The Knox congregation sponsored him, first as an Intended Candidate and then as a Candidate. He completed an Arts & Sciences Degree with a major in Sociology graduating in May 1976. He studied theology at St. Andrew’s College graduating in the spring of 1979. Dexter was ordained by Saskatchewan Conference June 10 th , 1979 at Melfort, SK.

Dexter was transferred to Alberta Conference for settlement and settled in Fort St. John, B. C. After five
years with St. Luke’s, Fort St. John, he sought a change and joined the staff of Manitoba and
Northwestern Ontario Conference where he served as the Conference Personnel Minister, for three
years. On July 04, 1987 he married Heather Dootoff, having accepted, the call to Dauphin First United
Church which began July 1, 1987. Three years later he and Heather became parents to Kelsey. He
remained with the Dauphin congregation for nine years. Dexter, together with Kelsey, then moved to
join Heather in Brandon, MB where he provided a year of Interim Ministry at Carberry, MB commuting
from Brandon and a year of Interim Ministry at Hamiota/Oakner where he was resident in Hamiota four
days out of seven. It was while serving Carberry United Church that he completed his training as an
Interim Minister.
In July 1998 Dexter accepted the call of Third Avenue United Church in Saskatoon. A year later Heather
and he became parents for a second time, as on October 14, 1999 they, together with Kelsey welcomed
Adrien to their family.
Dexter began ministry with Heritage United Church on January 1, 2004 and thirteen and one half years
later he concluded that call by retiring. In retirement he has served as Interim Minister with First
Wesley United Church, Thunder Bay, Retired Supply Minister with Third Avenue United North Battleford
and is now serving as an Interim Minister with St. James United Church. While at First Wesley he
completed an Interim Minister refresher program in Edmonton.
His interests outside of church include gardening and cooking.
